You open your monthly report and see it: organic traffic is down 20%. Your first thought is that something broke. Your second thought is probably, “Is this AI?”

Sometimes it is. Sometimes it is not. And sometimes a traffic drop does not hurt your business at all. Here is how to tell the difference before you change anything.

Why AI answers can lower website traffic

Google now shows AI-written answers on many searches. AI Overviews appear at the top of regular results, and AI Mode gives full chat-style answers. At Google I/O in May 2026, Google said AI Overviews had more than 2.5 billion monthly users.

When the answer is right there, fewer people click. A Pew Research Center study of 900 US adults found that people clicked a regular search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when there was none. Clicks on links inside the AI summary itself were rare, about 1% of visits.

The searches hit hardest are usually simple information questions. “What is a root canal?” or “How long does a water heater last?” are easy for AI to answer. Buying searches, like “emergency dentist open Saturday” or “water heater replacement cost in Dallas,” still send many people to websites and phones.

Other reasons traffic drops

Before blaming AI, rule out the usual causes:

How to diagnose the drop in 15 minutes

  1. Open Google Search Console and compare clicks and impressions for the last three months against the same period last year.
  2. If impressions are steady or up but clicks are down, your pages are still showing. People are just clicking less. That points to AI answers or other changes on the results page.
  3. If both impressions and clicks are down, your rankings likely fell. That is a classic SEO issue worth looking into.
  4. Split your pages into two groups: blog and information pages, and service or product pages. Most AI-related drops land on the first group.
  5. Check the Generative AI report in Search Console, launched in June 2026. It shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  6. Now check what matters most: calls, form fills, bookings, and sales.

The numbers that matter more than traffic

Traffic was always a stand-in for something else. What you really want is customers. Here is a short list worth watching every month:

Many businesses are seeing fewer visits but steady or better leads. The visitors who skip the click were often looking for a quick fact. The ones who still click tend to be closer to buying.

What to do next

If your service pages are holding up and leads are steady, there is no need to panic. Keep improving the pages that bring in customers.

If leads are also falling, focus on these steps:

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO dead because of AI?

No. Google’s AI features pull from websites, and Google says normal SEO best practices still apply to them. What has changed is that ranking alone is not enough. Your pages also need to be clear enough to be cited.

Should I stop writing blog posts?

Not necessarily. Stop writing posts that only repeat basic facts any AI can answer. Write posts that answer real buying questions and show your own experience.

Does Search Console show AI Mode traffic?

Yes, in part. Clicks and impressions from AI features are included in your overall Performance report. The newer Generative AI report shows impressions only.
