Ask Google “who can fix a leaking water heater today in Plano” and you may not see the usual three map results anymore. You might get a written answer instead. It names a few businesses, says why each one could fit, and shows a map on the side.

That answer comes from Google AI Mode, and it is no longer a side experiment. At Google I/O in May 2026, Google said AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly users, about a year after launch.

So the question for a local business owner is simple. When someone asks Google’s AI who to call, does your business come up?

What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a chat-style way to search inside Google. People type full questions and follow-up questions instead of short keywords. Google reads many sources and writes one answer with links.

Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews may use a method it calls “query fan-out.” In plain words, Google takes one question, splits it into smaller related searches, runs them at the same time, and combines what it finds. Google explains this in its guide, AI features and your website.

This matters for you. The water heater question above may trigger quiet searches about same-day service, water heater repair, reviews, and service areas. Your business has a better chance of showing up when your information answers those smaller questions clearly.

Where does AI Mode get local business information?

For local searches, AI Mode leans on the same places Google has used for years:

When someone taps a business inside an AI Mode answer, they usually see a panel that looks like a Business Profile, with hours, ratings, and directions. If your profile is thin or out of date, the AI has less to work with. This is why Google Business Profile optimization now affects more than the map results.

Google is also clear about one thing: there is no secret trick. It says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and normal SEO best practices still apply. You do not need special AI files or new code. That is good news. The basics many businesses skipped now matter more.

A 20-minute check you can do this week

  1. Open your Google Business Profile. Is your main category the most accurate one? Are all your services listed? Are holiday hours set?
  2. Compare your business name, address, and phone number on your website, your profile, Yelp, and Facebook. They should match.
  3. Read your last ten reviews. Did you reply to them? Recent reviews with real detail help customers and Google understand what you do well.
  4. Look at your website. Does each main service have its own page that says what you do, where you do it, and who it is for? If not, that is the first place to start your local SEO work.
  5. Ask AI Mode two or three questions your customers would ask. Note which businesses appear and what the answer says about them.

That last step needs one warning. AI Mode results are more personal than the classic map results. Two people in the same city can see different businesses for the same question. So do not panic over one screenshot. Check a few times over a few weeks and look for patterns.

How to tell if AI Mode is showing your business

Google Search Console added a Generative AI performance report on June 3, 2026. It shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device, and date. You can read Google’s announcement here.

The report shows impressions, not clicks. So pair it with your call tracking, form fills, and bookings. If AI impressions go up but calls stay flat, the problem may not be visibility. It may be your page, your offer, or how fast the phone gets answered.

What AI Mode does not change

People still pick businesses they trust. A clear website, a complete Business Profile, honest reviews, and quick replies were always good local marketing. AI Mode simply rewards them more openly, because the AI wants to recommend a business it can describe with confidence.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate strategy for Google AI Mode?

No. Google says standard SEO best practices apply to AI Mode. Focus on accurate, complete information across your website and Google Business Profile.

Can I pay to appear in an AI Mode answer?

Google does show labeled ads in some of its AI search experiences, but you cannot pay for a spot inside the AI-written answer itself. That part is earned.

How long does it take to show up in AI Mode?

There is no fixed timeline. Business Profile fixes can show up fairly quickly. Website content and reviews usually build over a few months.

Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?

No. AI Overviews is the short AI summary at the top of regular results. AI Mode is a full chat-style search. Google says they may use different models, so the links they show can differ.
