A year ago, ChatGPT had no ads. Now businesses in the US can sign up, set a budget, and show sponsored messages to people asking ChatGPT for help.
If you already run Google Ads, the natural question is whether ChatGPT ads deserve part of your budget. The short answer: they are worth a small, careful test for some businesses, and worth waiting on for others. Here is how to tell which group you are in.
A quick timeline
- January 2026: OpenAI shared its ad principles, including that ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.
- February 2026: Ads began showing to logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans in the US.
- May 5, 2026: OpenAI opened a beta self-serve Ads Manager and added cost-per-click (CPC) bidding, so you can pay for clicks instead of only impressions.
People on paid plans such as Plus and Pro do not see ads. That is worth remembering, because some of your best customers may be paying users.
How ChatGPT ads work
Ads show up in conversations where they fit what the person is asking about. They are labeled as sponsored and kept separate from ChatGPT’s own answer. OpenAI says advertisers get grouped performance data, not anyone’s chats or personal details.
There are limits too. OpenAI says ads do not appear near sensitive topics like health, mental health, or politics, and do not show to people it believes are under 18. Its help center also says advertisers in some sensitive or regulated categories, such as health, financial services, dating, and politics, are excluded for now. If you run a medical, dental, or finance business, check eligibility before you plan anything.
For tracking, OpenAI offers a pixel and a Conversions API, so you can see the leads, sign-ups, or sales that come after a click.
How ChatGPT ads differ from Google Ads
With Google Ads, you mostly choose keywords, and your ad shows when someone searches them. With ChatGPT ads, the system matches your ad to the conversation. Questions in ChatGPT tend to be longer and more detailed, like “I want to finish my basement in Atlanta. What should I budget?”
That can be a plus, because the person has often explained their problem in detail. But the platform is new, the tools are still in beta, and there is far less data on what works. Google Ads has years of proven results, mature tracking, and known costs for most industries.
Who should test ChatGPT ads now
A small test makes sense if most of these are true:
- People research and compare before they buy from you, like home renovation, B2B services, software, or higher-priced products.
- You already track calls and forms properly, and you know your cost per lead on Google.
- You have a clear landing page for one specific offer.
- You can set aside a test budget you are okay learning from, without hurting campaigns that already work.
Who should wait
Hold off for now if:
- You do not have conversion tracking set up yet. Fix that first, on every channel.
- Your business falls into a restricted category.
- Your budget is small and Google Ads is not fully working yet. Proven demand on Google usually comes first.
- Your website does not turn visitors into calls. More clicks will not fix a weak page. Sometimes a better landing page is the smarter place to spend.
How to run a fair test
- Pick one service and one city or region.
- Send clicks to a page built for that offer, with a clear phone number and a short form.
- Set up the pixel or Conversions API before you launch.
- Run the test for 30 to 60 days so you have enough data to judge.
- Compare cost per qualified lead, not cost per click, against your Google Ads results.
One more setting to check. In October 2026, OpenAI told advertisers it would turn on “creative enhancements” by default for self-serve campaigns. This lets the system rewrite headlines, resize images, and adjust ad text. If exact wording matters in your field, review that setting in Ads Manager and turn it off if needed. PPC Land covered the change here.
Paid ads are only half of it
ChatGPT ads and showing up in ChatGPT’s actual answers are two different things. According to OpenAI, paying for ads does not change the answers. If you want ChatGPT to name your business on its own, that comes from your website, reviews, and reputation. That is the work of answer engine optimization.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum spend for ChatGPT ads?
Industry reports say OpenAI removed the early minimum spend when its self-serve Ads Manager opened to US businesses. Check Ads Manager for the current terms.
Do ChatGPT ads help my business appear in ChatGPT answers?
No. OpenAI says ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives.
Are ChatGPT ads better than Google Ads?
Not better or worse, just newer. For most local businesses, Google Ads is still the proven starting point, and ChatGPT ads are a test channel on top of it.
